Gallery ILÉ is thrilled to announce that 2 works by NICOLA LO CALZO, are now on view at the Wereldmuseum in Amsterdam, as part of their current exhibition entitled: ONZE KOLONIALE ERFENIS | OUR COLONIAL INHERITANCE.

These fascinating photographs show the memories of the resistance against slavery in Haiti and Guadeloupe and the ways in which these memories live on.

The connection to ancestors lives on in Haiti and Guadeloupe through resurrection rituals and the reenactment of historical events. The photographs shown by the Wereldmuseum do not focus on the painful aspects of the history of slavery, but rather demonstrate the strength that emerged from it.

A total of sixteen works have been acquired by the Wereldmuseum. Each belong to the Ayiti and MAS series and are part of a long-term project in which Lo Calzo explores the legacy of the history of slavery. In doing so, he will eventually involve not only the entire Caribbean region but also Africa, America, and Europe.
The Wereldmuseum is the first institution to acquire work from this particular project. This acquisition was made possible by the BankGiro Lottery.

The photographs by Nicola Lo Calzo have been published in Liberation, Le Monde, and The Independent, among others.

The exhibition ONZE KOLONIALE ERFENIS | OUR COLONIAL INHERITANCE. runs until 30 June 2027.
