Oswald Matro
For Oswald Matro, the act of painting is a dream log of sorts through which the artist
deciphers his own reflections on contemporary West African societies, a tale weaved by the threads of history, traditions and the identity Inherent to his native Benin.
Cross pollinating both Christian and Animist spiritual ideologies, Matro's uniquely idiosyncratic narrative, brings into play varying viewpoints pertaining to human interrelationships, familial conflicts and societal interplays. For Oswald Matro, Art is a means to rise above the existential conundrums of our lives, by opening new portals of dialogues between the past and the future, between the realms of the seen and that of the unseen, toiling at the intersection of dream and reality.
Referencing traditional iconographic painting,Matro's compositions balance colour and perspective with great fluidity. His technique challenges our expectations regarding the medium. Elevating the act of creation to a holistic paradigm, each canvas becomes stage to a whirling display of visual effects, sublimated by a brilliant use of both synthetic and organic components. Acrylic, oil pastel, spray paint, siphoned sand and plaster, are layered in, using a brush, a palette knife or simply fingers, before scraping them off, as if to better emphasise the meaning of the work and reinforce its interaction within a three-dimensional space.
Deceptively innocent and whimsical, Matro's storytelling often alludes to geopolitical issues, environmental crisis and conflicting moral stances on the meaning of life.
Seeking to reinforce the notion of humanity's shared sovereignty, Matro's practice denounces our insatiable lust for consumption and our propensity for destruction, further questioning the complexities that continue to shape the interrelations between the African continent and its Western counterparts.
